Gunshot scares off burglars who pretended to be police

UPDATE @ 4:25 p.m.

A resident of a duplex in the 3400 block of Ridge Avenue fired a single gunshot in his home and scared off one or more burglars who kicked in his back door early Tuesday morning, according to the Dayton police report.

The 29-year-old male victim told police he was getting ready for bed around 1 a.m. when he heard someone trying to kick in his back door to the kitchen, according to the report.

While the resident went to retrieve his handgun he heard the back door give way and then voices in the kitchen announcing that they were police, according to the report.

The resident fired a round into the wall toward where he heard voices; he then heard one or more burglars running away, according to the report.

The victim told police he believes the culprit is the son of his neighbor on the other side of the duplex.

Police interviewed the neighbor, who denied hearing the commotion next door. The neighbor told the officers his son was with his girlfriend and the officers searched the home to confirm his son was not home.

UPDATE @4:20 a.m.

The homeowner’s neighbor also called 911. The neighbor reported the homeowner threatened his son.

“He threatened to kill everybody in the house,” the neighbor said to the 911 dispatcher.

Earlier, a man in the 3400 block of Ridge Avenue called 911 and reported two men kicked in his back door. He said he heard two male voices.

“They came in screaming Dayton police,” he said. “Dayton police.”

The homeowner reported the two men returned to the house next door.

A homeowner fired a gun after his back door was kicked in during an attempted burglary.

Police are investigating the attempted burglary that happened in the 3400 block of Ridge Avenue Tuesday morning.

Initial reports indicate the bullet the homeowner fired hit the wall and no one was injured.
