House of Bread is marking the completion of an expansion two years in the making that will make it possible to serve more of Dayton’s most vulnerable.

A community celebration will mark the completion of a two-year project that will help House of Bread better serve Dayton.

House of Bread, a non-profit Dayton community kitchen, can now expand operations with a brand new family dining room. Construction included the renovation and expansion of storage, cooling and kitchen areas. The center serves free, hot and nutritious meals to anyone in need, 365 days a year.

“Hunger in our community has a big impact on some of the youngest people in our community, our children,” said Melodie Bennett, executive director. “We knew we needed to expand our dining space to help them and their families – and that even more, we needed a special, separate place for families with children to enjoy a meal and feel comfortable coming to our door.”

On Monday, House of Bread will celebrate the new space with light refreshments for attendees. The 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. event is open to the public.

The project was completed earlier this year, according to a release. A capital campaign was led by House of Bread’s board of trustees, with a lead gift from the Mathile Foundation, an organization that “invests in opportunities for educational, social-emotional and physical development for children and their families,” according to its website.

House of Bread has been serving the Dayton community for more than 30 years. According to a release, they prepare and serve more than 140,000 meals a year. The center is located at 9 Orth Ave. in Dayton and lunch is served daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
