How to get FREE gun locks, bicycle helmets in Riverside

The Riverside Police Department is offering free gun locks and bicycle helmets.

Free bicycle helmets will be available for children at the Bike Rodeo, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 2 at Beverly Gardens, 5555 Enright Ave. Free refreshments and a bicycle giveaway will also be held at the Bike Rodeo.

The first rodeo of the year happened May 12. The events are sponsored by the Riverside Health and Safety Commission.

The police department also offers free gun locks on weekdays, courtesy of Project Child Safe. Gun owners who want a gun lock can stop by the Riverside Police Department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m, Monday through Friday.

Nearly a third of accidental deaths caused by firearms might be prevented by use of two devices: A child-proof safety lock and a loading indicator, according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute.
