A nearly $1 million expansion of the YMCA at the Heights wrapped up on Dec. 11.

The expansion added 5,000 square feet to the wellness center, making it now nearly 10,000 square feet.

Executive Director Chris Lindeman said the construction cost around $700,000 and the YMCA added about $250,000 worth of equipment into the new area.

Construction on the YMCA, located at 7251 Shull Road, began in July.

The expanded area houses free weights and functional fitness equipment. The added space will also allow for more cardio equipment like bikes and treadmills, Lindeman said. Functional fitness is a type of training that combines movements and trains muscles for real-life movements.

The YMCA at the Heights also has an indoor walking track, an indoor swimming pool and a family gymnasium.
