Hundreds say farewell to iconic radio personality Bucks Braun

Hundreds of people gathered to say farewell Sunday to longtime radio personality John “Bucks” Braun.

The broadcaster for nearly 50 years -- 30 in the Dayton area -- was the morning show host at Classic Country Radio in Xenia since 2004 and a member of the Dayton Area Broadcast Hall of Fame.

He died unexpectedly Jan. 4. A four-hour public visitation for the 68-year-old Centerville resident was held at the Westbrock Funeral Home on Wayne Avenue.

“He was working up to the day he left and I think that was the way he would have wanted to go,” said Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith, who noted that Braun earned his radio license before he was old enough to get a driver’s license.

Braun was known for his role in the community, greeting people at various events and helping fundraisers, particularly those that benefited Vietnam veterans.

“One of the things I’ll always remember most about him is his morning show topics,” said Tyler Fairburn, a listener and frequent caller to the show. “Not a lot of radio hosts would be asking you some of these questions -- they were nothing bad, just off the wall funny stuff.

“Bucks was a real humorous guy. He always liked to have fun,” he said. “Dayton has truly lost an American icon.”
