While the store itself is not changing size, it will stock more grocery items than it did before, recalling the store’s early days when it was a Convenient Food Mart.
“We’ll have canned goods, IGA brand items, we’ll have a heck of a lot more dairy items. You name it, we’re going to stock it,” Daniels said.
The store was a Convenient Food Mart when it opened in 1986 and became an AmeriStop in 1993. However, AmeriStop corporate went bankrupt last year.
“We’ll increase our groceries by 5,000 items in the store. ... It will be handy for the costumers, with decent price and selection. It’s not a typical convenience store anymore,” Daniels said.
The conversion will begin Oct. 5 and will take about eight weeks to complete, Daniels said. The AmeriStop in Monroe, at 2 East Ave., also will undergo this change, with its conversion expected to start around Oct. 12, Daniels said.
This will be the first time IGA has had a presence in Trenton since the full-size IGA store at 703 W. State St. closed in 2006.
The city has been trying to attract a grocer to the former IGA building, and that is still the plan, said Trenton economic development director Jim Foster.
