Kinder pupils send thank-you’s to their community

MIAMISBURG — Sometimes a heartfelt thank-you can be cut from construction paper.

Kinder Elementary students in kindergarten through second grade made thank-you’s in the form of bookmarks, cards, paper flowers and even decorated grocery bags.

It was the school’s first “Kinder Caring Kangaroo Day,” the brainchild of teachers who sought a project “that would involve all the children,” according to Lisa Ankeney, a first-grade teacher.

“No matter how rich or poor, old or young, everyone has the ability to give to others,” Ankeney said.

Some of Kinder’s kids, for instance, benefit from food contributed by Miamisburg Helping Hands & Food Pantry.

The school recently collected 1,380 canned and boxed food items in a competition with Bear Elementary School. So Helping Hands got a thank-you of paper grocery bags decorated by the kids.

The Miamisburg Senior Adult Center received bookmarks. Ankeney said several senior citizens, including Kinder grandparents, donate time at the school.

Miamisburg firefighters and police officers got thank-you cards for taking their time to educate kids with safety tips.

Miami Valley Community Church, which donates book bags and school supplies to Kinder students, got paper flowers.

Other teachers included Kerri Clark and Shelly Robinson (kindergarten); Andrea Weser (first); and Diane Lealos and Sarah Pelphrey (second).
