Kitchen fire displaces family of 5 in Xenia

A family of five was able to safely escape a Wednesday afternoon fire at their home in Xenia.

Firefighters were dispatched around 12:20 p.m. to the house in the 900 block of North Detroit Street. Crews were able to contain the fire to the rear of the house, Capt. Thomas Norris said.

The fire started in the kitchen, where the range was on. The fire is believed to be caused by combustible items too close to the stove that ignited, Norris said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family of three adults and two children.

There were no injuries, and the family also rescued pets, including a duck with an injured wing they are nursing back to health, Norris said.
