HAMILTON — Stretching your dollar a little further can be made easier through free classes on efficient grocery shopping.
Through its Prevent Hunger Campaign, Budget Meals, Inc., a nonprofit based in Powell, Ohio, will teach Hamilton and Middletown residents techniques for saving 30 to 60 percent monthly on groceries, said Carol Scudere, founder and director of operations.
Scudere said during the classes on Monday and Tuesday, tips on saving money and reducing childhood obesity will be offered, as well as low-cost recipes, menu planning, and any cooking questions can be answered.
“When looking for deals people are stuck on brand names, but store brands have improved so much in the past 15 years and you can save 30 percent,” Scudere said.
Scudere said anyone interested in saving money and over the age of 12 is welcome to attend the class.
Scudere encourages families to get children involved by teaching them how to prepare meals. She said children should avoid the quick, fast-made foods that are high in sodium, and treats and sodas should be rewards for doing well.
“It brings families closer together and improves childhood obesity while having fun,” Scudere said.
Scudere said Budget Meals grew out of frustration from the high unemployment rate and wanting to help people save money. She said through state assistance a family of four can receive $400 a month for food. But she said a family that size can eat well for $300 a month.
Carrie Mancuso, public relations manager at Lane Public Libraries, said the Hamilton library is pleased to have the class held at its facility.
“The library is happy to be involved in the community as a meeting place for non profits of this type,” Mancuso said. “A lot of nonprofits move around a lot and don’t have permanent space to invite people to a seminar.”
Reservations aren’t necessary but Scudere recommends calling ahead to (614) 505-6431 as space is limited.
