Local 8th grader to compete in national spelling bee

A local student will compete on one of the biggest stages this summer, when she travels to Washington to compete in the national spelling bee competition in May.

Lane Schnell, an eighth grader at Magsig Middle School in Centerville, qualified for an all-expense-paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee after her victory at the Dayton Area Spelling Bee at Sinclair Community College.

“Scandium,” a chemical element, was Schnell’s competition-winning word, besting 16 other students en route to being placed in the national spotlight.

As a sixth grader, she won her school bee, and last year she placed fifth at the regional bee.
