Winter Storm: School leaders decide on cancellations, early dismissals

UPDATE @ 9:04 p.m.: Superintendents have had to deal with the decision of whether to cancel school or dismiss early because of the winter storm forecast for Friday.

Schools in Miamisburg, Centerville, Kettering, West Carrollton, Trotwood and Beavercreek are set to plan normal days, according to News Center 7’s Kate Bartley.

Other districts, such as Dayton Public Schools, are closing. Others still, such as Clark Shawnee Schools in Springfield, are dismissing students early.

“Dismissing early is very tough simply because of the pick-up routine," said Miamisburg Superintendent David Vail, noting that he prefers to cancel school altogether.

He sat down as early as Monday with other superintendents in cities such as Centerville and Kettering to make a decision.

Another decision school officials will be forced to make will come if the conditions become too harsh to let students leave after the last bell.

Vail said it's always a possibility.

“We’ve got the kitchens. We’ve got the food,” he said. “Certainly for the safety of the kids, not putting anybody on the road, we’d do what we had to do to harbor them in the buildings.”
