Various metal parts and scraps will find a new life in coming days as part of the latest public sculpture project at Vandalia’s Art Park.
The Heavy Metal Remix project kicks off Sept. 7 and will continue as local metal artist Doug Benedict creates a sculpture from donated reclaimed metal parts and scraps.
Public Art in Vandalia and the Cultural Arts committee along with the Vandalia-Butler Foundation and Minster Bank presents the project.
“We’ve had a lot of response both with materials and curiosity,” said Candice Farst, Vandalia vice mayor and council liaison to the Public Art in Vandalia committee.
Among items donated have been a farm cultivator and small propane tanks. “I believe a concept has been working its way out. He (Benedict) will continue to add pieces as the idea comes together,” Farst said.
The public can watch as the sculpture takes place between Sept. 7-18.
Volunteers have been selected to assist Benedict with the project.
The public was asked to donate metal items for the sculpture such as tools, old bicycle parts, old car parts, car rims, grates, radiators and chains. Among items that were not needed were aluminum, cast iron and galvanized steel.
Farst said Benedict would continue to add pieces as the project comes together at the park.
“We have volunteers lined up to work with him and others to serve as docents while he is working for the entire event. It is all working out well and doing what we desired — getting the community involved,” Farst said.
The metal sculpture will join at the Art Park the two totems located at the park entrance. Last year, city residents made the mosaic pieces combined into the totems as part of the Art Park Mosaics project.
The Day of Art in the Park on Sept. 17 from 1-6 p.m. will feature various art-related activities and a free concert from 3-6 p.m. by the Cricketbows. A Heavy Metal “Uncorked” wine tasting event will be held Sept. 18 from 3-6 p.m.
