Miami Twp. cruiser hit when officer stops to help stranded motorist

The driver accused of hitting a police cruiser is Ryan H. Trump, charged with failure to control, failure to move over, and driving under the influence.

He was treated and released from a hospital with no injuries.

A Miami Twp. police cruiser was hit by a SUV while the officer was helping another motorist early Tuesday.

Officials said the officer was helping a stranded motorist around 1:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Ohio 725. The cruiser, which had its lights on, was then struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The officer was not in the cruiser at the time of the crash.

Initial reports indicated the driver was suspected to be intoxicated, but officials on scene could not confirm those reports.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
