Miamisburg company produces prosthetics

When British-based prosthetic manufacturer Endolite opened a sales and distribution site the United States, the company was primarily concerned with winning contracts for the British public health system.

Twenty years later, the high-tech manufacturer has brought its microprocessor-powered prosthetics stateside, and Americans, particularly service members, are customers.

Endolite found the area ideal to start expanding the business into this country, said Sue Borondy, marketing and communications manager.

“There’s a good base for technology and the type of individuals and materials we need to manufacture the product,” Borondy said. “It’s close to the highways for distribution. This corridor here really works out well for us.”

What the business does: The company has followed emerging technology for 20 years, when it first began exploring the use of hydraulic systems in prosthetics. Endolite’s products, which include foot, ankle, shin and knee prosthetics, primarily for people who have lost limbs, Borondy said.

The products have grown more advanced in stability control, said Chris Feighner, operations manager. They have the ability to track the person’s gait and compensate accordingly.

“Our biggest focus is developing products that are going to match as close as possible the limb they’ve lost,” Borondy said. “Provide high functionality so they can get busy living.”

What makes the business stand out: The company works all levels of production at the Miamisburg facility; from machines producing parts to assembly, clinical specialists and customer service. It employs 48 and makes up to 1,200 feet and 150 to 200 knee prosthetics a month.

Chris Nolan, vice president and general manager, noted the prosthetics have been particularly popular with veterans.

“In their world, it’s not just a product. It’s their life.” Nolan said. “We look into newer technologies that assist in that smoother and quicker transition into the prosthetic. It’s fulfilling when you’re doing something for people to make their lives better.”
