“There are many other individuals that we may recognize later, but I just think it’s important to say thank you,” he said.
At Bear Elementary, for instance, the Riverview Baptist Church provided school supplies and offered hot dogs, popcorn and snacks to the youngsters.
Members of the Miami Valley Community Church helped Kinder staff move into the new Jane Chance Elementary School. As many as 18 volunteers “helped teachers unpack boxes” and organize the classrooms.
“Then they fed them, all the staff and all the volunteers,” Whitehead said.
The church also provided school supplies and sponsored a carnival. Whitehead called the church’s work “a great support to the Kinder staff.” Kinder students have been transferred to Chance while the building is being remodeled.
At Mark Twain Elementary, the Miamisburg Assembly of God provided a backpack and school supplies to every student.
Sally Royer, Miamisburg School district social worker, also sponsored an annual event that provided school supplies to needy families. This district-wide event distributes school supplies donated by various area churches and groups.
Donations were received from Curves of Miamisburg, St. James United Methodist Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Miamisburg Christian Church, the Women of the Moose (Miamisburg Chapter 224) and St. James UMC Thrift Shop.
Finally, Marsha Watts, assistant superintendent, highlighted the “Blessings in a Bag” program that provides food each Friday to needy students at every elementary school in the district.
Blessings in a Bag is supported by St. James United Methodist Church, Parkview United Methodist Church, Our Lady of Good Hope, Riverview Baptist Church, St. Henry’s and St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church.
Also Trinity United Church of Christ, Wesleyan Church, Miamisburg Assembly of God, Miamisburg First Church of God, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In other matters
Terry Skudlarek, gifted services coordinator for the school district, presented members of the Destination ImagiNation teams which were awarded a number of high-place wins at the organization’s global competition in late May.
Destination ImagiNation is a problem-solving challenge. Miamisburg sent five teams to global this year. The high school team, seven members strong, competed in three challenges.
