10-week business training course offered

The Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area is offering a course for people interested in starting and maintaining their own business.

The Micro-Enterprise Business Development and Training Program, a 10-week session, begins Jan. 7 and continues through March 10. Classes meet on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Action Partnership office, 719 S. Main St., Dayton.

Participants will hear tips from accountants, bankers, attorneys and other professionals.

Enrollment for the program is limited and pre-registration is required.

Pet adoption event today at Dayton Mall

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton has partnered with the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center and SICSA for the annual Home for the Holidays adoption event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today inside the Dayton Mall near J.C. Penney.

The three organizations will have more than 40 pets available for adoption. The MeowZa Cat Boutique in the mall will also be open with more cats and kittens looking for forever homes.

New Year’s bird walk at Woodland Cemetery

Amanda Lawson, an Ohio certified volunteer naturalist, will lead a slow-paced bird walk through the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2.

Woodland is home to many diverse species of birds and the bare trees make it easy for viewing.

Attendees should dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera and binoculars.

The walk will leave from the main entrance of the cemetery, which is located at 118 Woodland Ave. off of Brown Street near the University of Dayton campus.

Paying someone else’s energy bill can be a gift

Vectren Energy Delivery is again offering its Gift of Energy program for the holiday season, which allows individuals to make a payment toward the Vectren energy bill of a friend, family member or neighbor.

The monetary pledge will be displayed on the recipient’s next bill as a payment. Both the donor and recipient will receive a Gift of Energy certificate in the mail, listing the donor’s name, recipient’s name and the amount of the pledge. If elected, the donor can remain anonymous.

Dog licenses available

Montgomery County dog licenses for 2016 are now on sale. Dog owners can purchase their license through Feb. 1.

FilmDayton to lead training on film crew work

“Beyond the Basics – Film Crew Essentials,” a training session led by FilmDayton, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17, at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth St.

The cost is $125 for members and $175 for non-members before Dec. 30. After Dec. 30, the cost is $150 for members and $200 for non-members. Lunch is included both days.
