The former Upper Deck Tavern, which shut its doors earlier this year after a decades-long run as a popular watering hole for former General Motors truck and bus assembly plant workers, is now on the auction block.

An open house will be held at noon on Aug. 3 at the former pub at 2651 Blanchard Ave., followed a week later by an on-site auction at noon on Aug. 10, according to Dayton Commercial Realty, which is handling the auction. The sale includes the property and remaining equipment inside the bar-restaurant, Dayton Commercial Realty officials said. Two liquor licenses are "available for an additional cost," the commercial realtors said.

The Facebook notice of the auction prompted a wave of tributes and nostalgia for the Upper Deck, and its predecessors. Here is a sampling of the comments:

  • "How sad. For all of us Truck and Bus workers that place was legendary! Thirty years ago it was a little hole in the wall that had people three deep all the way around the bar with only Stephanie and Ruthie working. The ball burger was the best thing in town followed up by the mountain of nachos with real cheese and jalapeños. When the coolers went out, they filled tubs with ice and iced down the beer on one of the hottest days of summer. They never let us down. Those were truly the good old days."
  • "The fact that they lasted over 10 years after GM (closed) says something!"
  • "When I first started at GM, this was John Bulls. You needed five years seniority to hang there."
