NEW: Motorcyclist is critical after collision on state Route 571 near Greenville

UPDATE @ 8:10 p.m.:  A motorcyclist reportedly remains in critical condition following the early morning collision with a Jeep on state Route 571 near Greenville, Darke County Sheriff's officials said.

Gary Higgins, 57, of Greenville, was headed west on his Harley Davidson when it struck the left side of a Jeep Liberty, which had pulled away from a stop sign and into the bike's path at 571 and Jaysville St. Johns Road.

Higgins was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. The driver of the Jeep, 53-year-old Joseph York, also of Greenville, was treated at the scene and released.

Higgins, who was ejected in the collision, was not wearing a helmet, sheriff's officials said in the statement.

INITIAL REPORT

Injuries have been reported following a crash involving a motorcycle on state Route 571 near Greenville Thursday morning.

The crash was reported about 6:25 a.m. at state Route 571 and Jaysville St. Johns Road in Greenville Twp.

Dispatchers said a medical helicopter was requested, but was not able to fly because of foggy conditions.

The motorcyclist has been transported to an area hospital, but the person’s condition was not immediately known.
