Navy was way for man to better self, family

John Warman was 26 and living with his parents when he says he decided to join the Navy.

Motivated by a desire to get ahead, Warman says service then took him all around the world and through education and personal achievement for him and his family.

Now a recruiter in Kettering, Warman, who spoke at a local Veteran’s Day Event in Moraine last month, says he’s proud of the choice to get involved in the service.

Name: John Warman, Logistics Specialist 2nd class, U.S. Navy

How he got involved in the military: “Part of the reason I got into the service is that I just knew I wasn’t getting anywhere. I was still living at home with mom at the age of 26, at the time my wife and daughter were living with me. It was a lot of the pay and benefits and stuff like that to support my family is why I ended up joining.”

What he likes about the Navy: “I like it still because of those benefits. As I’ve progressed on the money’s gotten better, and more so the lifestyle, being able to just move around and get my education paid for all at the same time.”

What he’s done since then: “My job is a logistics specialist, when I first joined the Navy they took me down to Meridian, Mississippi where I learned to be a logistics specialist. From there, they shipped me over to Norfolk, Virginia where I was stationed aboard USS Nassau, and the aviation supply division over there.”

“I was there for five years, did two deployments, traveled all over Europe and south of the Equator as well. Now I’m stationed here as a recruiter.”

Most satisfying part of service: “The best thing is since I’m debt free I don’t owe anything to anybody, except the contract with Uncle Sam, I think that’s the best part, paying off my student loans and setting myself for success whether I get out of the Navy in a few more years or in 20 years.”
