Dollar General is considering building a new 10,000-square-foot, free-standing store at 6655 Brandt Pike in the city of Huber Heights.
The Huber Heights planning commission is scheduled to vote today on the rezoning of the property from agricultural to planned commercial. Planning commission will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 6131 Taylorsville Road.
If planning commission approves the rezoning, city council will then vote on it next month, according to assistant city manager Scott Falkowski. The detailed development plan for the site will go before planning commission after the first of the year, he said.
“We’re always looking for the right kind of development,” Falkowski said. “We’ve had discussions before where people have asked, ‘Why do we need another dollar store?’ But they’re good because that’s what the market will bear. There’s a need for dollar stores right now. This one will be of a little higher quality to meet our building standards, which is a good thing.”
The construction timeline is unknown at this time, Falkowski said. A vacant house currently is on the site.
Falkowski did not know the cost of the project or how many people the new store would employ.
There are two Dollar General stores in Huber Heights located in shopping centers — 6131 Brandt Pike and 5597 Old Troy Pike. The company would relocate the 6131 Brandt Pike store to 6655 Brandt Pike, according to Crystal Ghassemi, a spokeswoman for Dollar General. Ghassemi declined to comment on any other plans related to the store.
“We are currently in the due diligence process for a possible relocation of our store in Huber Heights,” Ghassemi said in an email. “While we’re interested in relocating to 6655 Brandt Pike, we have not committed to doing so yet. We are excited to continue serving our Huber Heights customers at our current store at 6131 Brandt Pike.”
There are about 40 Dollar General stores in the Miami Valley.
Based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., Dollar General employs a total of 100,000-plus people and has more than 11,000 stores nationwide, including 590 in Ohio.
