An Oregon District business will celebrate its grand opening from 5 to 9 p.m. today, April 12.

The boutique occupies the space that formerly housed Hedges & Wolf.

The name of the new boutique beck + call, 504 E. 5th Street, is meant to be a play on words, co-owner Brittany Smith said.

“To be at someone's beck and call is to be entirely subservient to them; to be responsive to their slightest request," she wrote. “We mean it as a tongue-and-cheek reference to women not being at anyone’s beck and call.”

The shop is co-owned by Kait Gilcher — like Smith a Wright State graduate and partner in Heart Mercantile and Luna Gifts & Botanical — replaces Hedges & Wolf, which closed on Feb. 19.

Opened in early 2018, that shop specialized mainly in clothing and accessories for women and had been owned by Smith, Gilcher, Carly Barrett, and Amanda Hensler.

As we reported earlier, Barrett left the business to focus on a wedding photography business and Hensler stepped back  to concentrate on her battle against breast cancer.

“We will be kid-friendly as we are carrying goods for children, and dog-friendly like all of our shops in Oregon District,” Smith wrote. “We expanded on our original concept but added products most requested by our patrons and neighbors and changed the vibe of the previous store.

The owners are hoping this store will “fill the gap” between what Luna offers and what Heart offers,” she wrote.
