New Springfield industrial park gets contractor

A 200-acre industrial park in Springfield, which once built has the capacity to add 1,500 jobs for the region, now has a contractor for the year-long project.

J & J Schlaegel, Inc., an Urbana-based company, was the lowest responsible bidder for the Prime Ohio II project, which is slated to begin Friday, according to a news release.

Prime Ohio II is located on Ohio 41 at the Interstate 70 interchange and the project will include site work and underground utilities.

J & J Schlaegel, Inc. placed a bid of $3.74 million for the project, which was among eight other bids received. The Board of Directors of the Community Improvement Corporation of Springfield and Clark County approved the contract during a special board meeting on Monday, the release said.

"We are very pleased and excited to be working in Springfield again," said Jerry Schlaegel, company president and CEO of J & J Schlaegel, Inc. "This is an exciting time for Springfield. Anytime you can add a big development like this, it's a pretty big deal. We are pleased to be a part of it."

The Urbana-based company is no stranger to the Clark County community, currently finishing site work on the Champion City Business Park, which is located on Lagonda Avenue. J & J Schlaegel also was involved in the creation of Springfield's White-Water play area on Buck Creek and the Eco Sports Corridor.

The Prime Ohio II project is the county's first development along I-70 since the 395-acre Prime Ohio Corporate Park was developed nearly 30 years ago, the release said.

"This is a significant development on a significant corridor, Michael McDorman, president and CEO of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, said. "We believe Prime Ohio II is the ideal location for companies looking for shovel-ready land near the coveted I-70/I-75/I-71 triangle."
