Outdoor Rec staff can help plan fun adventures, rent needed equipment

Did you know you can rent a camper from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s Outdoor Recreation? Whether you’re riding the highways or hiking the hills, Outdoor Recreation has items for a fun adventure.

The office offers various opportunities to explore, entertain or have fun.

Experience the excitement of flight while soaring across the sky in a glider May 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ride along as a certified pilot guides you through the airways and enjoy incredible views from an engineless glider plane. Cost is $105 for civilians/retirees and $35 for active-duty military under the RecOn program.

If you’d like to learn a new activity or you’re already a pro, the staff at Outdoor Recreation can assist. ODR offers current equipment to give outdoor enthusiasts the ability to try something new without storage, maintenance and licensing costs.

Outdoor Recreation is not just for equipment rental. Check out its state-of-the-art climbing wall or leave the planning to the ODR staff and go on an organized trip.

ODR has plans for the summer, starting with Outdoor Movie Nights at Bass Lake in Area A, starting May 10 from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch a family-friendly movie and don’t forget the bug spray. Outdoor games are available from 8 to 9 p.m., then grab a favorite spot and snacks to view the movie “Goonies” at 9 p.m. The event is free.

Start Mother’s Day festivities at Bass Lake May 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and enjoy an assortment of yard games with the opportunity to paint a lovely tote bag as a gift for mom. Cost is $28 for two and $12 for each additional guest. Sign up by May 8.

ODR offers many options for fun. If you prefer to spend summer days poolside, choose between three base swimming pools, including an indoor pool open year-round and two seasonal outdoor pools, which are located behind the Wright-Patterson Club and in the Prairies housing.

ODR offers adventure on base, too. Head to Outdoor Recreation and check out the Freedom Climber. Challenge yourself on a wall that spins continuously as you climb without the fear of falling. Or spend a relaxing day in an RV or tent. FamCamp, located near Bass Lake, offers camping and RV hookups for a small fee. Showers, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and a dump station are available with a reservation.

Boat rentals, bait, snacks and base fishing permits are also available. FamCamp is open to all military, retired military and Department of Defense civilians. If you need to store your RV, ODR manages two lots on base.

Head to Outdoor Recreation for summer activities and equipment rentals. The office is in Bldg. 95 in Area A. For more details about ODR programs and rentals, call 937-257-9889.
