Trotwood Sgt. Joseph McCrary said the vehicle, driven by Chris Reynolds of Piqua, was traveling southbound on Salem just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when the accident occurred.
Jones was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where she died at 9:04 p.m. from her injuries.
Reynolds said he saw a woman standing on the grass between the sidewalk and the curb.
“She just ran out in front of the car,” he said. “There was no way I could avoid her.”
He said he believes the back tires of his car ran over Jones. Reynolds pulled his car into the nearby Auto Zone parking lot and said he ran back to try and help Jones.
“I didn’t know what I could do. I was in shock,” he said.
McCrary said police are still trying to determine why Jones stepped or fell into the street.
Police said they will perform blood tests on both Jones and the driver to determine their blood-alcohol levels. McCrary said Reynolds did not appear to intoxicated and voluntarily agreed to a blood test.
He said if it is determined that Reynolds was not impaired, then he probably won’t face any charges.
“He had the right of way,” McCrary said.
