The restaurant’s mail-order operation, which allows customers to buy uncooked Pine Club steaks and some of the restaurant’s other products for home delivery, is scheduled to resume next week, after the products are replenished, the Pine Club’s David Hulme said this afternoon.

The Pine Club steakhouse in Dayton — which shut down its carryout operation less than two weeks ago amid the coronavirus pandemic and statewide stay-at-home order — is offering free drop-off delivery to homes in the Dayton area for its steak-box purchases.

The offer is designed “to say thank you, and to make this Easter Sunday feel a little more like Easter,” Pine Club officials told its customers in an email Wednesday. “In all our 70-plus years together, we’ve never faced a challenge quite like this one. But we are certain that together, we will get through this.”

Diners will have to do their own grilling (or broiling or reverse-searing), however. The steaks are delivered uncooked.

The at-home delivery will be available in the Dayton area Friday, April 10 (order by no later than noon Friday) and Saturday, April 11 (order by no later than 10 a.m. Saturday). Orders must be placed online, at thepineclub.com/shop/steaks.
The restaurant’s offer reminds customers that, “Steaks are perishable, and someone must be home to receive the drop-off. For health reasons, we cannot leave a perishable package unattended.”

The Pine Club, like all other restaurants in Ohio, was forced to cease its dine-in service on March 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic and an order from state officials. The steakhouse restaurant offered carryout service of prepared meals for about two weeks before shutting that operation down.
“Just too many issues; health, state mandates; unemployment insurance issues; and on, and on,” the restaurant’s David Hulme said at the time.

In December 2013, the Pine Club was included in a list of “10 of the World’s Greatest Old Dining Institutions” by a writer for T Magazine, the New York Times Style Magazine, joining restaurants in Paris, London and New York City.

Six months before that, Michael Stern, co-author of “Roadfood,” identified the Pine Club as his favorite steakhouse in the country in a USA Today story. The Pine Club has also scored shout-outs from Gourmet Magazine and Tastingtable.com, among others. The steakhouse opened in 1947 at 1926 Brown St.

In their Wednesday announcement of the free delivery offer, the restaurant said, “The Pine Club has been a Dayton tradition for generations of people, and we will be here for you. Always. From all of us, thank you for your lifelong support, and happy Easter.”
