MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Division of Police will recognize its outstanding officers, corrections officers and dispatchers today.
This will be Police Chief Greg Schwarber’s last banquet in that position as he retires Friday. Maj. David VanArsdale will be his replacement.
Despite these significant changes, the night will focus on the accomplishments of department employees, said Vanessa Grooms, administrative assistant for the police department.
The Police Officer of the Year, Corrections Officer of the Year and Dispatcher of the Year will be named at the event. Each Officer of the Month will also be recognized, Grooms said.
Each nominee was selected by peer employees, said Sgt. Rick Bowling at the Middletown city jail.
“They pick the person they think is the most confident co-worker, who has a willingness to participate as a team player, who is aware of their duties,” Bowling said.
The awards program has been in existence for several decades, though VanArsdale said it was resurrected in 2008 as an annual ceremony.
The banquet will be at the Fraternal Order of Eagles at 1300 First Ave. in Middletown. A party for Schwarber and all other retirees will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the city building, One Donham Plaza.
