Post offices close at normal times on Tax Day

Majority of tax returns were sent online, not through mail last year.

DAYTON – Federal tax forms must be postmarked by today, but due to the sharp decline in mailed tax forms, Dayton-area post offices are no longer offering extended hours on tax day.

In past years, Dayton’s main post office on East Fifth Street was open as late as midnight, with workers sometimes stationed along the street, collecting forms from car windows as people drove by.

But federal officials say 77 percent of tax returns were filed online last year, so all area post offices will stick to regular hours of operation today.

To get an April 17 postmark, mail must be turned in by 6 p.m. at the 1111 E. Fifth St. post office or as early as 4:30 or 5 p.m. at other branches, depending on their standard closing time.

Postal officials encouraged customers to read the posted times on collection boxes to make sure that their tax return will be collected and postmarked before the deadline. Any tax packages weighing 13 ounces or more must be brought to a post office and handed to a postal clerk at the window.
