UD receives $2.1M from Tipp businessman

H&R Block franchise owner wants scholarships to help student athletes.

DAYTON — Tipp City businessman Ron Morton has committed $2.1 million to the University of Dayton for scholarships supporting students majoring in business fields who compete in nonrevenue generating sports.

Although Morton, the largest franchise owner of H&R Block offices in the nation, is not a UD graduate, he chose the school because of its commitment to community service. The gift will help recruit athletes who want to make their mark in the business world, according to Matt Shank, dean of the School of Business Administration. Thirty percent of the university’s student athletes are enrolled in the business program.

A Meadowdale High School graduate who ran track and cross country in high school, Morton earned an athletic scholarship to Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. He later coached basketball and taught physical education as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania and is an avid UD men’s basketball fan.

“What you learn on the field really helps you through later life. Any athlete will tell you that,” Morton said. “You learn values, focus, how to follow directions.”

Today he owns 62 H&R Block offices in Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana and West Virginia.

He said part of his agreement with UD is that students who receive his scholarships will be asked to give back to the program in the future when they become successful.

“I’m hoping it gets bigger,” said Morton, who makes his home in Tipp City and Sumter, S.C. “This is just the start.”
