Pregnant woman hit by vehicle near Springfield post office cited

A pregnant woman who was struck by a car on North Limestone Street near the downtown Springfield post office has been cited in connection with the accident.

Emergency units responded to 150 N. Limestone St. about 1:35 p.m. Monday after the crash was reported.

Sgt. Jerry Montico of the Springfield Police Division said the woman who was struck was treated for minor injuries and released. He said after reviewing camera footage from the surrounding buildings, the woman was found to be at fault and has been cited for jaywalking. Her name wasn't available Tuesday.

A fire engine responding to the scene of the strike also was involved in an accident with a civilian vehicle. The driver of the car, Melvin Powell, said he was coming through the intersection at North Limestone Street when the emergency vehicle collided with his car.

Springfield Fire/Rescue Chief Brian Miller said the engine sustained minor damage and is still in service. The vehicle Powell was driving reportedly suffered front-end damage. Powell’s wife, a passenger in the car, was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Her condition is presently unknown.

Springfield police tell this newsroom no citations have been issued in connection to a pregnant woman hit by a car. Police said they’re reviewing video from the downtown area to identify the at-fault individual in the strike.

A separate crash occurred at the scene involving a fire engine and a civilian vehicle. The driver of the car, Melvin Powell, told this newsroom he was coming through the intersection at North Limestone Street when an emergency vehicle collided with his car.

The man’s wife, a passenger in the car, suffered cuts and scratches and was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

A fire engine will be placed out-of-service until repairs can be made after it was hit by a vehicle, while responding to a pedestrian crash.

No firefighters were injured in the second crash, but the driver of the other vehicle received treatment at the scene and will likely be transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center, according to our crew on the scene.

Officials have not provided an update on the pedestrian crash. Initial reports indicated a 9-month pregnant woman was hit by a vehicle in front of the post office on North Limestone Street.

FIRST REPORT

Police and medics have responded to reports of a pregnant woman who was hit by a vehicle near the U.S. Post Office in Springfield Monday afternoon.

Emergency units were dispatched to 150 North Limestone Street around 1:35 p.m. after the crash was reported.

The condition of the victim was not immediately available.

A fire truck responding to the scene was also involved in a separate crash, according to our crew on the scene.
