Residents worry development will congest roads

Shaker Run traffic will be routed along residential roads causing backup and safety concerns.

TURTLECREEK TWP. — A group of residents in the Shaker Run subdivision are concerned that plans for a new development near their neighborhood will cause an overrun of traffic, although the developer of the project is cautioning to let all the facts be known.

“It’s a safety issue mainly,” said Robert Burnside, one of the concerned Shaker Hill residents who spoke up about the concerns at the Turtlecreek Twp. trustee meeting on March 30.

Burnside said the main concern for residents is that the plans to develop a new phase will cause a lengthy closure of the entrance to the Shaker Run golf course.

The Shaker Run development and Golf Course are off Greentree Road, near the Otterbein Retirement Center and Armco Park.

The golf course is currently accessed by a special road east of Shaker Run Boulevard, where residents access their homes.

The traffic that uses the golf course, Burnside said, will be routed along the residential roads, causing backup and safety concerns for pedestrians.

“Lots without homes don’t have sidewalks built yet, so there is a lot of concern for people walking on the streets in those areas in particular,” Burnside said.

Burnside said residents are also concerned that the golf course will lose some of its parking and golfers will park along the crowded streets, creating dangers and difficulty for residents to drive through.

The land is being developed by Grant Communities, an affiliate of Fischer Development Co.

“We want to be friends with the Shaker Run developers,” Burnside said.

“We are just trying to get them to manage the development so they always maintain an entrance....

“It’ll cost more money, but it can be done,” Burnside said.

Burnside said that the residents were planning to meet with representatives of Grant Communities at a presentation on April 15 to express their concerns and open dialogue. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the golf course club house.

“We are aware of the concerns of the Shaker Run residents and have been in direct communication with them regarding their concerns,” said Todd Huss, president of Grant Communities via e-mail.

“We believe our plans provide a sound balance between the interests of all involved parties; the residents, the Shaker Run Golf Club and The Fischer Group.

“We will continue to communicate directly to the residents to ensure that the information is accurately conveyed.”
