Retail store serving area for decades

When Dayton Nutra Foods opened in 1957, there weren’t chain stores selling vitamins, supplements and health food products.

More than 50 years later, the store is still helping customers and selling vitamins, supplements, health foods, and other products. It also remains a family business, said Sue Miller, who, along her husband Al Miller, owns the store.

Miller explained the knowledgeable staff and customer service makes the business stand out. Nowadays, even though customers know about many products, they still have questions.

“We try to take the time,” she said, explaining that the staff knows many of its customers and is willing to explain products to them.

Address of business: 5294 Salem Ave., Trotwood

When the business was founded: Dayton Nutra Foods was founded in 1957 by the Grill family. Al and Sue Miller purchased the business in 1980. The business is managed by their daughter, Vicky Van Scoyk.

What the business does: Dayton Nutra Foods is a retailer of vitamins, herbal supplements, vegetarian products, fruit, nuts, grains, teas, diet products, juices, protein supplements, frozen food, health and beauty aids and athletic enhancement products.

What the business offers that makes it stand out: Miller notes that Dayton Nutra Foods sets itself apart from chain stores with its customer service, product satisfaction, and its dedicated knowledgeable staff. Family ownership has allowed the business to grow and maintain its existing target market. In 2007, it received the "Best Small Business" award from the Trotwood Chamber of Commerce.

How the business started: Originally started by the Grill family in a building on Salem Avenue, Dayton Nutra Food later moved to Miracle Lane. The Miller family purchased the Miracle Lane store in 1980 and opened a second location on Main Street in downtown Dayton in 1982. The downtown location had a café upstairs that served vegetarian food, sandwiches, soups, fruits and specialty drinks. The downtown Dayton store closed in 1986. Dayton Nutra Foods moved into its current location in 1996.
