Most of the county’s charter schools were closed, as almost all rely on Dayton Public Schools for busing. Most Catholic schools were also closed.
To the south, Butler and Warren counties have been under winter storm warnings, and all the public school districts in those counties were closed Tuesday. All seven Greene County school districts are also closed.
But to the north in Miami County, only Bethel Schools were closed, and only Miami East was delayed. Only one Darke County district (Tri-Village) was on a two-hour delay. Most Clark County schools were closed, as the storm edged slightly north as it moved to the east.
Snow updates
As of 10 a.m., National Weather Service reports showed the southern focus of the storm, with one inch of snow in Tipp City and Englewood, but 2.5 inches in Xenia and 4 to 5 inches in Lebanon and Maineville.
Snow showers are expected to continue off and on Tuesday, with WHIO reporting that Wednesday morning snow showers with a light accumulation are possible, raising the question of Wednesday school delays or closings.
Makeup days?
Local school districts have different rules on whether they’ll need to use makeup days this year. Some are still under the state’s old rules because of their pre-existing labor contracts.
That means if they miss more than five days, they’ll either have to do makeup days, or so-called “blizzard bag days,” where students do school work at home during snow days. Very few districts are up to five missed days yet.
Districts that have already transitioned to the state’s new rules need to make sure students have been in school for at least the minimum number of hours for their grade level. Most districts have a safe enough cushion that they could miss more than five days and not need to make up time.
