Scouts gather shoes to distribute

Most people have heard by now about the New York policeman who bought comfy socks and all-weather boots for a barefoot homeless man in Times Square.

New York is not the only state that has people who are going without proper shoes this winter. You can be part of the compassionate solution here.

You can provide shoes for Lake Road Baptist Church’s “Shoe Shine Ministry” by delivering them to Springboro’s Boy Scout Troop 50. The local troop is collecting gently-used shoes that will be transported to the ministry’s warehouse in Lebanon.

Donations of all types of serviceable footwear are welcomed. Troop 50 has already collected over 190 pairs of shoes. Donated footwear will be cleaned, sanitized and given to individuals in need at local schools, abuse shelters, homeless shelters and to missionaries.

Shoes can be dropped off at Scout meetings on December 17 and 31 between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Scout meetings are held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 225 N. Main Street, Springboro. Contact Troop 50 Chaplain Sandy Liesner at 748-1442 for more information.

“It’s such an absolute neat ministry,” said Liesner, chaplain for the past five years. “There’s always a shortage of mens shoes. That’s why I got the Scouts involved. They are from ages 12 to 18, so they are in men’s shoes. It ends up being a really good match.”
