FIRST REPORT (June 22)

A 12-year-old Bradford boy riding his bicycle was struck and killed Monday when he exited an alley and continued into the path of a pickup truck.

D.J. Hawes would have started seventh grade in Bradford schools this fall. Principal P.J. Burgett said D.J. was an “all around awesome kid. “

Miami County sheriff’s Lt. Eric Lachey said the boy was not wearing a helmet in the accident on South Miami Avenue at Church Street. His brother, also on a bike, was following and witnessed the accident.

D.J. was still alive at the scene, Lachey said, but was pronounced dead at Dayton Children’s Hospital. He was taken there by CareFlight.

The driver of the truck won’t be charged, Lachey said. According to the preliminary incident report, that driver was traveling about 25 mph when the accident occurred about 6:20 p.m.

The speed limit in the residential neighborhood is 25 mph, Lachey said.
