Sew Dayton offers one-of-a-kind creations

What: Sew Dayton, 16 East Brown Street, Dayton.

Sew Dayton is what happens when two creative people with skill sets that complement each other, meet and find that they have the same vision of starting a customer-friendly one-stop sewing and craft shop.

Co-owners Jesy Anderson and Tracy McElfresh officially opened their doors on September 14, but the two were already well-known as part of the Dayton art scene. Both were already selling creations online.

What the business does: In addition to selling vintage cloth and carefully selected fabrics, the shop also sells vintage buttons and other notions and features vintage sewing patterns. Sew Dayton clients can select their pattern, fabrics and notions and have a dress fitted and sewn by McElfresh, or they can simply take the materials home to make the dress. Alterations can also be done at the shop.

Accessories created by Anderson are also available in the store for immediate purchase. Sewing lessons from beginner to advanced will also be offered to the public in the coming months.

What makes the business stand out: McElfresh specializes in creations from the 1940s through the 1980s, but is also able to recreate fashions by sight from recent fashion magazines.

“We want to be really customer focused by answering any questions they have about sewing, or finding the answers for them,” said Anderson, who welcomes the freedom of working with the public and spending 11 years working in a corporate environment.

How the business started: Anderson and McElfresh both graduated fromKettering Fairmont High School, but didn’t meet until last year when the two were both involved with the Handmade Dayton pre-Christmas sale. McElfresh instantly recognized Anderson’s strengths in the field of business and marketing and Anderson appreciated McElfresh’s sewing technique and in-depth knowledge of fabrics.

Customer comment: “I am so proud to own six dresses and five skirts made by Tracy McElfresh,” writes Diane Stava, a current customer of McElfresh. “I highly recommend her to anyone who wants a one-of-a-kind garment, custom made to exact measurements. There is nothing like a dress made just for you. She takes the time to make sure she understands what you want, she delivers quickly and precisely, and she is a joy to work with.”

Store Hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
