Sobriety checkpoint to begin at 5 p.m. today

GERMAN TWP., Montgomery County — A sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on Ohio 4 and other selected roadways this evening in German Twp.

The checkpoints will be conducted from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

The German Twp. (Montgomery County) Police Dept., along with the police departments from Clay Twp., Miami Twp,, and Perry Twp., and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will conduct the sobriety tests along with checking for proper seat belt usage.

Anyone consuming alcohol should plan for a designated driver or make other arrangements, according to German Twp. Police Chief Lew Wilcox, who is co-ordinating today’s effort to stop impaired drivers.

This is one of three sobriety checkpoints that the Montgomery County OVI Task Force has been involved in over the past several weeks. The other two checkpoints were held in on Ohio 48 in Dayton and Salem Avenue in Trotwood. This goes along with stepped-up police patrols being conducted here and around the nation to stop impaired drivers, according to Miami Twp. Deputy Chief John DiPietro, spokesman for the county’s OVI task force.

A sobering statistic passed along by the Ohio Department of Transportation’s safety experts is that “in 2010 more than 2,400 Ohio drivers were involved in crashes during the holiday weekend – with nearly 30 percent of the crashes occurring Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. An analysis of Labor Day crashes from 2000 to 2010 “reveals it is the deadliest holiday weekend, with 187 fatalities on Ohio roads.
