Solar compactors go to total of 10 sites

Dayton will place solar-powered, trash-compacting garbage cans at 10 sites around the city in the coming weeks, after City Commission approved the purchase Wednesday.

The compacting cans save money by reducing the frequency of waste pick-up, and they automatically send an email to the city when a pick-up is needed. The city tested two of these cans in recent months.

The 10 sites will be: Keowee at Stanley; Brown at Stewart; West Third at St. Mary’s; North Main at Siebenthaler; West Fairview at Catalpa; Xenia at Steele; South Main at Patterson; Gettysburg at Germantown; Wayne at Wyoming; and East Fifth at Stivers.

The $32,000 project is funded by a $25,600 grant from the Greater Dayton RTA, plus $3,200 each from Waste Management and the city of Dayton.
