Soldier from Kettering dies after surgery

KETTERING — An outpouring of support is planned Monday for the homecoming of a 2007 Fairmont High School graduate who died of complications from surgery for back problems related to combat duty in Iraq.

Army Sgt. Cody Bryan, 22, died Oct. 14, a day after surgery in Colorado. He had sustained back injuries in two Humvee rollover incidents in Iraq. His second tour of duty ended in March.

An e-mail circulating locally encourages the community to line Far Hills Avenue between Stroop and Rahn roads with flags or signs of support at 6 p.m. Monday to greet Bryan’s family and their military escort. Parking is at the Apex church, 5200 Far Hills Ave.

Bryan is survived by wife Megan (Moore) and children, Kaydence, 4, and Ian, 2. A third child, Tanner, is due in January.

Bryan’s stepmother, Raelynn, said the family has learned since his death of the many ways Cody helped his fellow soldiers, from fixing cars and running errands to providing them with a place to stay when needed. Those stories, she said, “are a tribute to my son and the person he is.”

Bryan had planned to receive an honorable discharge from the Army and had aspired to help others as a counselor, according to his obituary.

Raelynn Bryan fondly recalled Cody as a practical joker, noting he had given her flowers after playing a joke on her on Mother’s Day. “I was speechless,” she said. “I’ll miss that sheepish grin of his.”

Raelynn said 29 soldiers are driving from Colorado to Ohio to provide military honors at Bryan’s funeral service on Tuesday. Bryan was part of the 64th Brigade support battalion, 3rd brigade, 4th infantry division, according to Fort Carson spokesman Major Ricardo Fregoso.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with funeral service and military honors to immediately follow, at Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to Megan Bryan for the couple’s children.
