South-area students take honors at Power of the Pen competition

RIVERSIDE — Magsig Middle School in Centerville took first place in both the seventh- and eighth-grade divisions in Power of the Pen’s district tournament Saturday, Feb. 13, at Mad River Middle School in Riverside.

In Power of the Pen competition, seventh- and eighth-grade students write three stories.

They have 45 minutes to write each story based on a word, phrase or idea given at the round’s beginning.

Students who scored in the top 50 percent and winners of best of round awards advance to regional competition March 13 at Wittenberg University in Springfield.

Regional qualifiers advance to the state final May 20-21 at the College of Wooster.
