"I asked him what was inappropriate about it and he told me it was see-through and he could see my shoulders," said Frederick.
However, school administrators contend the shirt was a violation of their dress code.
"You could see underneath it was a spaghetti-type top," said Principal Craig Morris. "In our minds and in our handbook, it was just not deemed appropriate for school."
The Miamisburg High School student handbook reads: Garments that are see-through or apparel that expose undergarments are not permitted. It also declares that students should not wear tank tops or garments with spaghetti straps.
Kortney's mother Darla Frederick, who picked her up from school, said, "She has on long sleeves, it's completely covering everything. You can't see any undergarments."
School officials contend they didn't send Kortney home but rather she chose to leave after being told not to wear the top again. The school offers students a change of clothes if they violate the dress code.
Darla Frederick says the policy went too far in this case.
