Towing group donates trailer to Riverside

Sandy’s Towing, located at 3051 Springboro Road West in Moraine, recently donated a trailer to Riverside, which in turn will help children receive free bike helmets.

“That particular trailer was towed and went unclaimed,” said Ted Durig, who owns Sandy’s Towing with Doug Thoma. “Towing can be seen as negative and this is something we can do for the community. We’re supportive of a lot of municipalities. We believe it’s important to be involved.”

The towing company also has sites in Middletown, Dayton and Vandalia.

Twice a year the Riverside Health and Safety Commission donates free bike helmets to Riverside children. The bike rodeo is a popular event.

“Everyone gets free hot dogs, Mike Sells’ donates potato chips, McDonald’s donates orange drinks and the commission also raffles a free bike,” city manager Bryan Chodkowski said. “It’s a lot to organize. Sandy’s recently started a relationship with the city and said they had a trailer that would meet our needs. They have contributed at other events as well.”

Sandy’s Towing recently signed a contract to be Riverside’s towing agent, starting in January.

According to Mayor Bill Flaute, the trailer will be used to store the bike helmets.

“It’s going to save money on rental places, and make it easier when we have our bike rodeo,” Flaute said. “We can take the helmets there in the trailer.”

The trailer was donated July 13 and it is being cleaned and painted with Riverside’s logo.

“This donation will allow the health and safety commission to effectively and efficiently reach out to the community,” Chodkowski said. “It makes it easier for them to volunteer their time.”

The commission is exploring new ways to be involved with the community. Some options include working with the Ident-A-Kid program or handing out free life vests in conjunction with the Eintracht Recreation Project.
