District Fire Chief Lester Flohr said the trackhoe had its cutting arm extended and was moving backward when a lower wall collapsed, sending it sliding sideways on a pile of debris. Firefighters had to work with care since the equipment was poised precariously, he added.
“The important point was to get him out of there,” Flohr said.
At 7 p.m., equipment was on the way from contractor Evans Inc. of Cincinnati to pull the trackhoe free. The worker was freed just before 6:30 p.m.
Demolition of the three-story building was scheduled for completion Friday, but will likely be delayed.
