Road work to prepare for a new recreation complex in West Carrollton is set to begin today.
One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction as crews work on the West Central Avenue reconstruction project, according to the city.
The $1.28 million improvement project is part of an ongoing initiative to revitalize the Carrollton Centre area, according to the city. That includes the addition of Miami Valley Sand, a $4.3 million, 6.6-acre volleyball facility being built on West Central.
Improvements to the curbs, sidewalks, water lines and storm sewers will be part of the reconstruction, which will include a center turn lane with one lane of traffic in each direction, according to the city.
The project also includes repaving of West Central from Elm Street to Miami Avenue and repaving Miami Avenue from Central Avenue to Main Street, city officials said.
The city plans to slightly widen West Central from Elm Street to Miami Avenue, and transform it from four lanes to three while adding on-street parking.
The road construction also aims to blend with future streetscape changes and handle traffic growth through 2039, city officials said.
Developers of Miami Valley Sand say they expect it to attract at least 300 people a night after opening later this year.
Miami Valley Sand will include 17 sand courts, records show. The indoor facility would include 44,000 square feet, nine sand courts, a restaurant and bar, heat, fans, and 20 large garage doors to regulate the air flow, officials have said.
The road project’s completion by Nov. 15 coincides closely with Miami Valley Sand’s opening in November. New traffic signals will be installed shortly thereafter, according to the city.
