Troy schools chief leaves for new job

TROY — Tom Dunn, Troy City Schools’ superintendent, resigned Thursday, July 1, after accepting the superintendent’s job for the Miami County Educational Services Center.

Dunn, Troy superintendent for five years, has been with the district for 33 years. Troy officials have not set a timetable on hiring a new superintendent.

Dunn is replacing John Decker, who retires July 31 after serving 21 years as the center’s superintendent.

Dunn interviewed for the ESC job this week and starts on Aug. 2. He was selected from 25 applicants, said Neil Thiesing, the center’s board president.

With a background in special education, Dunn worked as an intervention teacher, an elementary school principal, director of curriculum and assistant superintendent before being named superintendent in Troy.

The ESC provides a variety of services and staff training under contract to school districts in Miami County. Dunn said a number of ESC’s services are for special needs students.

“This gives me the opportunity to get back closer to why I got into education for: providing services for kids,” he said. “I am looking forward to learning new things.”

Joyce Reives, Troy’s school board president, was not immediately available to comment on the search for a new superintendent.

The Troy board recently hired a new treasurer, Craig Jones, who will take over this month from the retiring Don Pence.

Jones comes from the Lakota Local School District in Butler County.

Dunn, 55, and his wife, Cinda, live in Troy.
