U.S. Reps. Mike Turner and John Boehner are expected to take part in a Tea Party at Voice of America Park in West Chester Twp. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
“It’s a collaboration being done by the Dayton Tea Party, Cincinnati Tea Party, Indiana Tea Party and the Ohio Liberty Council,” said Rob Scott, president of the Dayton Tea Party.
The groups support limited government and oppose President Barack Obama’s health care plan.
John Kasich, a 2010 Republican candidate for Ohio governor, and U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, are also taking part in the event.
The location is symbolic, said Chris Littleton, director of the Cincinnati Tea Party’s community groups.
“Voice of America broadcasts the message of freedom and liberty throughout the world,” he said. “As we see things change at the national level and we see certain liberties being ignored ... we ask ourselves: If my voice is not heard right now, right here, is it ever going to be?”
Littleton said a conservative estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 are expected to attend.
In addition to the town hall meeting, there will be music, entertainment and information booths.
Though Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., will be on his home turf, the event is not expected to be without contention, Littleton said. Nor will it be as unruly as recent town hall meetings on health care reform.
“Are we going to let these people get out of control? No, we’re not going to let that happen,” he said. “But are people upset? Yes they are.”
