The video from the early morning hours of April 1 shows a group of bar employees smoking outside the entrance at 111 E. Fourth St.
The victim can be seen wearing a white collared shirt and vest. The suspect, wearing a tank top, approaches and appears to talk to some of the employees, but not the victim. According to accounts from employees, he said he left his coat inside and asked them to go in and look for it. After a few minutes, he walked away.
Later, the suspect returned in a vehicle. He cannot be seen in the video, but the victim can be seen walking from the door to the curb. He told police that the suspect once again asked about his coat. When the victim turned to walk inside, he can be seen barely flinching as he is shot in the back. He quickly shuts the door behind himself.
Leon Coleman, a shooting victim himself, said he thinks the club should be shut down.
“You go out to have fun. Why you need to carry a gun? That's not fun to me,” he told News Center 7's Kate Bartley on Tuesday.
Coleman said he suffered a gunshot wound to the back in January 2011 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. "I feel for him," Coleman said of the victim in the surveillance video. "I'm going to send a prayer out for him and his family because I understand exactly what they’re going through."
The bar employee is expected to be OK, according to police, who are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect in the video to call Dayton police at (937) 333-COPS.
