Washington Twp. offers shredding, electronics recycling Saturday

Washington Twp.’s next Community Shred Day will offer residents the opportunity to drop off old electronics for recycling and to have sensitive documents and data storage materials shredded and recycled.

Centerville and Washington Twp. residents can recycle items and receive information about identity theft from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Public Works Garage, 8190 McEwen Road. A photo ID is required.

Electronics recycling

Virtually anything electronic found around homes will be accepted, including televisions, computers, stereos, phones, cameras, clocks, radios and copying machines. Mercury and mercury-containing devices also are accepted, along with various types of batteries, dental amalgam and lead foil. Computer hard drives are removed and shredded for security reasons. Electronics collection is available to residents only, not businesses.

“The goal is to reduce the amount of electronic waste going into local landfills,” said Mike Wanamaker, Public Works director. “Electronics recycling is important because toxic metals can leach into groundwater or be released into the air through incineration.”

The project is made possible through a partnership with Montgomery County Solid Waste District. A Recycling Incentive Grant will pay for 75 percent of the October electronics collection.

Shredding/ID theft

The township also will accept the same paper records and data storage materials as past Community Shred days.

Up to 12 grocery-sized bags per vehicle will be accepted for shredding and recycling. Acceptable materials include paper, tapes, credit cards, CDs and microfilm. As always, a sheriff’s deputy from the Washington Twp. substation will provide free information about identity theft.

Law enforcement experts recommend that people shred important documents such as invoices, bank statements, canceled checks, medical records and credit card receipts.
