Weisenborn has record of success

HUBER HEIGHTS SCHOOLS

Last week, I shared with our community the many accomplishments of Studebaker Middle School. This week, I would like to focus on the successes of Weisenborn Middle School from the 2009-10 school year.

Weisenborn Middle School was built in 1974 and was named after Clara E. Weisenborn. Weisenborn was a resident of Wayne Twp. (now the city of Huber Heights) and she served in the Ohio General Assembly for more than 20 years.

Weisenborn serves students in grades six through eight and has a total enrollment of approximately 720 students. Like Studebaker, Weisenborn has a long-standing tradition of educational excellence. This is especially evident at the end of the school year when students are recognized for their academic achievements.

In May, more than 230 Renaissance students attended King’s Island in honor of their academic achievements.

Seventeen seventh-grade students were inducted into Weisenborn’s National Junior Honor Society and 20 eighth-grade students earned the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. Additionally, 20 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade were recognized for perfect attendance and 245 students earned a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during the fourth quarter.

During the school year, select Weisenborn students got a jump on earning high school credit with six eighth-graders attending a Wayne High School geometry class and 17 seventh- graders taking algebra I at Weisenborn.

The Board of Education has approved the earning of high school credit by middle school students if the course content and requirements are parallel to the high school course.

Based on a recommendation from a citizens committee, our grade configurations will be modified with the construction of our five elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school.

Our five new elementary schools will house students in prekindergarten through six. Our new junior high will serve students in grades seven and eight and our new high school will continue to house all students in grades nine through 12.

The new junior high is under construction at the current Weisenborn site. The Board of Education has determined that our new school will be named Clare E. Weisenborn Junior High School.

Once Studebaker is no longer utilized as a school, it will be remodeled to become our central office and for other school and community uses. The building will remain named Studebaker.

I am very proud of the many accomplishments of the staff and students of Weisenborn Middle School. I know that the 2010-11 school year will be just as successful.
