Woman killed jumping from pickup on I-75

WEST CARROLLTON — Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the death of an Indianapolis woman who jumped from a moving pickup truck just after midnight Sunday, July 19.

Jennifer Knighton, 22, was pronounced dead by West Carrollton medics on Interstate 75 near mile post 46.6 in Montgomery County, according to police reports. Cause of death is suspected to be from a head injury she received when she jumped from the truck that was traveling 55 mph.

Knighton was a passenger in a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup driven by her father, Joseph W. Lapoint, 40, also of Indianapolis.

Knighton and Lapoint had been visiting friends in Waynesville, but Knighton, who was highly intoxicated, didn’t want to leave with her father, who planned to return home for a funeral, said the Patrol’s Sgt. J.C. Chesser. Lapoint, however, didn’t want to leave his daughter while she was intoxicated, Chesser said.

The two left Waynesville together. But on the way home, “she opened the door and stepped out,” Chesser said.

Chesser doesn’t suspect any foul play, but said the investigation continues.
