Mundy’s claim of having Stage 4 Lymphoma began to unravel April 25 when her co-workers went to surprise her at Greene Memorial Hospital, where she said had told them she was receiving treatment. But, according to police, Mundy wasn’t there.
The next day, Mundy resigned from her position and her then-employer, the Ohio Masonic Home in Springfield, contacted police.
Springfield police reportedly tracked $5,750 in donations at four fundraisers for Mundy, from November 2012 through February, March and April of this year. Dan Driscoll, Clark County assistant prosecutor, said Mundy deceived others.
“(She was) pretending she had an illness and then collected monies at fundraisers that were held for her benefit, knowing the individuals who donated to those fundraisers were being deceived,” Driscoll said.
When Mundy was interviewed by detectives with her attorney May 13, she reportedly admitted to lying about having cancer. She told detectives she deposited the checks into her bank account and put the cash into a dresser drawer for personal use.
She also told officers “she was looking for the attention and had no idea that people would do fundraisers on her behalf,” according to court records.
Judge Douglas Rastatter accepted Mundy’s guilty plea.
She faces up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine, as well as three years of possible probation. As part of the plea, Mundy agreed to pay $5,750 in restitution.
A pre-sentence investigation has been ordered prior to her sentencing hearing Sept. 24. Mundy remains out of jail on her own recognizance.
